2019 Suma School Construction

The principal and township leadership reached out to CLT asking for assistance to construct a new facility.

The Suma Ahenkro Preparatory School is located in Suma Ahenkro in Ghana. The village has a population of about 7,000. Most families in this community are extremely poor. Average family sizes are 5 to 8 children per family. The extreme poverty in the town has impacted the education of the children as well. The Suma Ahenkro Preparatory School has a student population of 240 students and spans kindergarten through middle school. The school conditions were extremely deplorable. The classroom structures which were built with wooden planks and corroded aluminum sheets were supposed to be temporary structures but became permanent structures because the community didn’t have the resources to build adequate and safe facilities. Several years ago, the structures began falling apart. The make-shift buildings were structurally unsafe and therefore placed the safety of the children in jeopardy. Additionally, the classrooms were overcrowded, and therefore teaching and learning were difficult to accomplish. The principal and township leadership reached out to CLT asking for assistance to assist with constructing a new facility. CLT partnered with the community. There provided unskilled labor to support the construction and some of the construction materials such as sand and stone. CLT raised additional funds for the other construction materials including cement, CMU blocks, roofing materials, doors, windows, and finishing materials The new facility has been completed (a 4 classroom block) which replaces the failing structures. The facility supports a total of 100 students and provides the following benefits: -Ensures that the classroom structures are safe so that the children’s safety is not in jeopardy - Helps to solve problems with overcrowding - Provides a stable environment for successful teaching and learning for the children - Provides an emotional and morale boost for the children who feel safe and happy at school - Helps to increase the student population intake.
