EXPANDING PEDIATRIC SERVICES

Pediatric Emergency Unit at the Fountain Care Hospital (FCH)

Brong Ahafo Region, Ghana

The FCH treats approximately 30,000 children every year and serves a combined catchment area with a population of over 300,000. For children who are critically ill, the FCH is not well equipped to treat some of these complex cases and severe trauma and therefore has to refer these patients to the Regional Hospital 3 hours away with few favorable outcomes as the probability of the child surviving decreases with the long travel time. Other times, based on the severity and risk of delay involved in the transportation process, FCH is compelled to keep the patient and try to stabilize the patient with limited resources and improvising which has also been very problematic.

It is expected that through the provision of this Emergency Unit, the FCH will support multiple Districts that access this hospital for pediatric services and would help reduce infant mortality and trauma-related child deaths.

The estimated cost of procuring the required equipment and beds, shipping, startup, and training, to set up this Pediatric Emergency Unit is approximately $40,000.
